Born as a result of a lifelong infatuation towards ceramics, Nitara is the brain child of Karishma, a fashion design graduate. Nitara is a design studio that currently focus on ceramics and they create minimal pieces that make a statement. Each piece is handmade by local artisans in and around Calcutta. Nitara believes in fair trade and sustainability. Having found paper alternatives to bubble wrap, they are a proud plastic free brand when it comes to their packaging.

Our personal favorites from Nitara are their Loop Mugs and Niva Candles.

Take a look at their collection here.

A quick Q&A with Karishma, Founder of Nitara.

1. How did your love for ceramics come to be?

I have always been fascinated with ceramics and fun tableware. I decided to start with Nitara because the options that I would usually find in the market were not to my liking. My love for minimal pices that work in a modern dinner table, and the scarcity of such pieces around me pushed me to finally take the plunge.

2. What's the most rewarding aspect of your work?

I love seeing something, anything be formed out of a lump of clay. I love the fact that clay is pliable enough to be molded into anything that one can imagine. Another aspect I love is that we've used plastic free packaging since our inception. At least 2 small brands are now doing so after getting inspired by us. That makes us the happiest! :D

3. What's the most challenging aspect of your work?

The most challenging aspect was to figure out a delivery network and our packaging. Suffice to say the journey involved lots of broken pieces and continuous heartbreak.

4. What's your favorite collection of products from Nitara and why?

Our first collection is our favorite collection. being only 2 collections (plus a capsule collection) old, there's not much to choose from, but the sentimental value due starting with the first set of mugs, is close to our hearts.

5. One thing you love about Bangalore.

I love the chill vibe of Bangalore, and the plethora of breweries! Hahaha. I love how driven the people there are yet, they know how to loosen up and relax to! And of course the Dosa.
